The heavy equipment of the hoplomachus, with his spear, dagger, greaves and round shield was inspired by the greek hoplites, a soldier type which prevailed for 300 years in the mediterranean from the seventh century BCE onwards. His armour made the hoplomachus a mostly defensive fighter, yeat his spear provided him with a long range, enabling him to stab and slasch at great distance. In case his adversary got to close, he coud still defend himslf with the dagger in his left hand and remained a dangerous opponent.
