Provocator
Provocator
Pompeji, before 79 AD
17. Januar 2012
Type: middle-heavy armoured swordfighter
Opponents: provocator
Weapon: short sword (gladius)
Armour: modified imperial Italic helmet, small rectangular or oval shield (scutum, or parmula), textile right arm guard (manica), metal breast plate (pectorale) leather gaiters, left greave (ocrea)
Total weight of equipment: 12-15 kg
Despite the comparatively high weight of his equipment the provocators defensive and offensive capabilities are well balanced. Mobility and fled of sight were not much impaired. So the provocator always fought an other provocator, and their fights were very dynamic. The gladius made very fast attacks possible, and the smaller shield and less massive helmet offered the possibility for quick and agile fighting styles. Since this armatura is very similar to the contemporary military equipment itt is thought that mostly former soldiers fought as provocatores, as they were used to the equipment through their military training.
„Hear her grunt and groan as she works at it, parrying, thrusting;
See her neck bent down under the weight of her helmet.
Look at the rolls of bandage and tape, so her legs look like tree-trunks,
Then have a laugh for yourself, after the practice is over,
Armour and weapons put down, and she squats as she used the vessel.“
Juvenal, Satire VI
Juvenal describes a Roman woman training to fight as a provocatrix, a female provocator.
